The elevator jerks again and Desiree stumbles into my arms. She shrieks and grabs the front of my shirt. On instinct, my arms come possessively around her back, ready to protect her against…anything, everything.
We pause. We look into each other’s eyes.
Dammit. That fire is still there. Even after all these years. Even after all the ways we’ve hurt each other. The passion I feel, I see it reflected in her eyes.
She takes a step back. Her palms press to the center of her chest and she laughs shakily. “I can’t remember the last time my heart beat this hard.” Tentatively, her hands come to my chest. “Your heart is beating hard, too,” she says softly.
“Yeah.” The last time my lump of coal beat this hard is the last time I was with you. I swear that’s what I hear the voice in my head whisper.
As if I’d ever say that out loud to the one woman who crushed me to my soul…
Blurb coming soon…
